Abstract

Street runs with about ten thousand runners are not rare in Hungary either
nowadays. In the last decade this popularity has brought changes not only in the
number of participants but in their composition as well. The present study
analyses street runs on the basis of four criteria: 1. Annual number of
contestants; 2. Sex ratio of contestants; 3. Age repartition of contestants; 4.
Educational level of contestants. The questionnaire-based study has used the
answers given on the entry forms by the runners who entered for the
competitions organised by Budapest Sportiroda. The analysis of the data has
proved the hypothesis concerning the number of the runners. The statement
concerning the sex ration of the runners was not correct, because women have
participated in a greater number than men. Nevertheless, men prefer long runs,
like marathons or half marathons. The presumption that most of the runners are
from the group age under 20 has also been verified. Our presupposition that
people with higher educational level enter a lot more often for these kinds of
runs has been proved. The analysis points out which groups are concerned of
these recreational street runs.
