THE HISTORY OF WATER POLO, AND THE EVOLUTION ITS COMPETITIVE SPORT “prehistoric time of the water polo”

Abstract

Water polo is one of the most successful team sport in Hungary. Our
national water polo team won nine gold, three silver and three bronze
medals during the Olympic history. Nine times could be Hungarian water-
polo players in the World Championships podium, and twenty times in Euro-
pean championships. In addition, numerous other international awards
have the Hungarian national team. Despite smaller downturn, I can say
without boastfulness, that since 1926, won the first European Champion-
ships, we are the best in the World. What happened before that? How the wa-
ter polo born? How widespread this game in Hungary and in the world? Aim
of the present study to answer these questions, and analyze the water polo
prehistoric time up until 1912 the Hungarian water polo team first Olym-
pic participation.
