Abstract

One of the most important scenes of health promotion and health protection
is the workplace, as we spend most of our time there.
In our recent survey health related quality of life and the level of stress,
employees have to face every day, was measured as the starting point of a health
intervention program for the company.
The SF-36 questionnaire was used for measuring quality of life, in which the
questions are groupped around two main dimensions: physical and mental
health. For stress measurement in the workplace the Siegrist questionnaire was
used, which assesses general well-being at work, sense of security and
satisfaction. The results were compared to the Hungarian average. 15% of the
employees participated in the survey (N = 32), predominantly blue-collar
workers (84.6%). The sample mean age was 42.8 years (SD 13.203).
Performing everyday actions are burdensome for many employees, e.g.
walking more than 1 km caused difficulty for 40%. Workers judged their own
health status better than the Hungarian average, but their results are scattered
around the average in both dimensions. Three fourth of the workers felt their job
secure, but only 46% saw a chance for promotion. 89% of the employees felt
that their work was of great responsibility.
It can be concluded from the above results that the company requires a more
comprehensive assessment of employees’ present health status and needs a
thorougly designed health promotion program.
