Abstract

Our research deals with the effects of dances, especially ballroom dancing, on personality. Many tests pointed out that music and moving to music have a beneficial effect on people’s cognitive, affective and physical abilities. It helps in building social relationships, dissolves inhibitions and has stress relieving effect. Active, quality free time spent with dance moves contributes to a healthy person for the need to develop a lifestyle, both in a mental and physical sense. In our study, we compare research results published in the literature with our own results and data with a survey of attitudes of recreational dancers and competitive athletes using a questionnaire. 207 mainly amateur dancers took part in the study, and we asked them about the beneficial effects of dancing, how they perceive themselves in their everyday life, whether it is in addition to motor skills, about aesthetics, relationship-building skills, which also play a prominent role in explanatory answers. 95.5% of the participants feel the stress-relieving effect of dance, as a result of which their self-evaluation is positive direction has changed over the years. It played a big role in the lives of several dancers, this activity helped them through difficult life situations and found themselves again. Our results in accordance with psychology and published results in the field of medicine are confirming that dance has a right to exist in our everyday life as a sport or recreational activity, and its beneficial effects should be widely promoted, even with a therapeutic purpose, in a more active, holistic way interpreted for the sake of a healthier society.
