Abstract

(The Austro—Hungarian Monarchy as a political community) The system of the Austro—Hungarian Monarchy caused debates when it came into existence and there are unsettled questions even today. What kind of role did Hungary have within the Monarchy? What effects will this role have on Hungary in the future? The main question of this dissertation is the following: how did the Monachy work as a political community? What kind of different political communities could be found within the „state", and what were the relationships among these communities? What effect did the local religious, national and state political communities have on each other; which among them were privileged and when? In the preface, this dissertation looks to answer what function does a political community have and what types of things this function contains. After making the concepts clear, the essay talks in short about the compromise of 1867. In the third part, the author confronts the Monarchy's political and social structure with the apparatus of concepts. The author comes to the conclusion that the Monarchy functioned as a federal state organization more than a dual organization.
