Abstract

Over the past centuries, the role of women in sport has undergone significant social and structural changes; however, balancing elite sport and motherhood still raises important professional and psychosocial questions today. The aim of the present study was to explore the experiences of Hungarian elite female kayakers who became mothers during their active sporting careers and later successfully returned to international competition. The research focused on the timing of childbirth, the process of returning to sport, and the underlying motivational factors. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach, based on the analysis of interviews with elite kayakers. The results show that most athletes consciously and deliberately plan to have children, and after giving birth they return to regular training within six months at the latest. Their return is primarily supported by strong intrinsic motivation and the intention to continue their sporting careers. The findings highlight that with appropriate personal and professional support, balancing elite sport and motherhood can be a realistic possibility for female athletes.
