Abstract

Physical exerise/education/training and sports have a complex effect on
character development.
Psychological and pedagogial studies also comfirm this fact.
Regular physial activity is an important component of healthy lifestyle and
has physical and mental benefits.
In the field of Criminal Pedagogy – using the neo-treatment educational
method among inmates – physical training is applied in drog prevention, but the
primary goal is estabilishing a constructive way of life.
The findings of the first research undertaken in prison enviroment have been
published in Hungary as well as in Europe. The research was carried out with 15
adult female inmates during four weeks, doing 30 hours of aerobics.
These women living under special conditions have clearly developed a
positive attitude towards physical training
Their answers in questionnaires, the corrections officier’s report and the
researchers’
– PE teacher and the Prison Commander personal experience – all show a
positive change in the inmates’ behaviour.
It has become easier for them to cope with aggresion and negative feelings,
furthermore, they have been become more confident in their interpersonal
relationships.
Further aims: carrying on this programme to prove the importance of
physical exercise in the social reintegaration of inmates by psychological and
personality questionnaires and by following their lives after release.
